All about the MB-300 Core exam | D365FO

Please note that Microsoft is retiring this exam on February 29, 2024. This also affects the requirements for certifications – MB-300 is obviously no longer a requirement.

Who should take this exam?

Candidates for this exam are usually functional consultants who analyze business requirements and translate them into business processes and solutions. In your day-to-day work, it is likely you will be actively managing Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations application lifecycles by using Lifecycle Services (LCS) and other Microsoft tools and platforms.

You should have a fundamental understanding of accounting principles and the financial operations of businesses, customer service, field service, manufacturing, retail, and supply chain management concepts.

It is likely, as with most MB-300 candidates, that you will specialize in one or more feature sets of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations; finance, manufacturing, and/or supply chain management and aim to go on to sit further exams to achieve certification in one or more of these specific areas.

The MB-300 is a prerequisite for all D365FO consultants who want to achieve certification in Financials (MB-310), Manufacturing (MB-320), Supply Chain Management (MB-330) or Apps (MB-500).

What do I need to do to prepare for the MB-300 exam?

The MB-300 exam will assess your capability using the core functions of Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations. Prior practical hands-on experience performing a variety of business tasks is essential to passing this exam, you can’t just rely on revising the study materials.

You will need to understand the common features and capabilities of Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations apps and how to configure and use each one. You will also need to be able to demonstrate an awareness of how the apps integrate with external systems and tools including Power Platform. The MB-300 exam was updated on 16 October 2020 and the objectives changed significantly to the prior version, it’s essential you ensure you are familiar with the skills that will be measured and assessed.

The best way to prepare for the exam is to practice the key skills that are measured, for the MB-300, these include:

  • Use common functionality and implementation tools (15-20%)
    You’ll need to be able to identify and use common Finance and Operations apps features and functionality as well as describe use cases for Power Platform apps and services.
  • Configure security, processes, and options (30-35%)
    You’ll need to be able to implement security, design and create workflows, configure organization administration features, and configure system administration features.
  • Manage Finance and Operations data (25-30%)
    You’ll need to be able to manage data, plan a migration strategy, prepare data for migration, and migrate data.
  • Validate and support the solution (15-20%)
    You’ll need to be able to test solutions and implement Lifecycle Services (LCS) tools.

The exam typically costs US$165 but is priced according to each specific country and region.

What should I expect in the exam?

The exam presents the user with different scenarios and is designed to test your ability to implement and configure applications to meet business requirements. It’s important to have a good working knowledge of different functions as well as being able to identify how, why, and when you might implement and configure different applications.

The exam is scheduled to last 220 minutes and will likely contain 40-60 questions, although this can vary. In the exam, you will be presented with different types of questions that cover 11 objectives and 4 functional groups, including:

  • Multiple choice and ‘Yes/No’ questions
  • Ordering and sorting problem solving processes
  • Matching pairs of words/sentences/meanings.
  • Case studies: a complex scenario is given that simulates what professionals do on the job, you will need to answer questions directly related to this case study.
  • Performance based testing using a hands-on lab: demonstrate your knowledge in a live virtual environment.

What do I need to score to pass the MB-300 exam and when will I get my results?
A passing score of 700 is required. You’ll find out if you have passed or failed the exam within a few minutes of completion. You’ll also receive a printed report containing your exam score and feedback on your performance on the skill areas measured. In this report, you’ll be given a numeric score for overall exam performance and also a bar chart showing performance on each skill area assessed along with details on how to interpret your results and next steps.

Do I have to pass the MB-300 to get certified in MSD365FO?
Yes, passing the MB-300 is a prerequisite in obtaining your certification in MB-310, MB-320, MB-330, or MB-500.

There’s nothing to stop you from taking the exams for MB-310, MB-320, MB-330, or MB-500 first, but if you want to obtain any of these certifications, you must also pass the MB-300 exam.
